What I’m Watching Wednesday: Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1

Every time I sit down to watch this show, I reflect on his there is no way it would have survived the current television climate. Next Gen really didn’t hit its stride until season 3. The first season has moments, but most of it is awkward and stiff. Some of the stiffness might be due to the uniforms. I understand most of the cast had back problems from standing so straight all that time.

Welcome to Winter Wonderland

With Christmas over I need something fun to distract me from the cold and the snow (and the fact that I’m running out of Christmas cookies) so I like to have a scavenger hunt. This year I’ve gotten together with a few other authors to make it bigger and better. There are three hunts and all you have to do is find the answers to the trivia questions and put them in the raffle for an entry. You can also pick up some entries by saying whether or not you want to receive the participating authors newsletters. The winner will receive a $10 gift card to the ebook retailer of their choice.

So come join the hunt. You never know what you might discover!

What I’m Watching: One Christmas Eve

One Christmas EveI grant you, this Hallmark movie about a family having a disasterous Christmas eve is cheesy and predictable, but it was also absolutley delightful. A puppy is dropped off at a business after close and the onlt people there to recieve it are the cleaning men. One of them can’t leave the puppy behind over the holiday where he tried to leave it on the doorstep of a newly divoced mom of two. She catches him before he can make his getaway and as he’s trying to explain, he falls on the sidewalk and they have to take him to the emergency room where they park in a no parking zone because they’re only going to be a minute—which turns into hours—and one disaster piles onto another. The acting was well done. The slapstick was delightful. There’s even an adorable puppy. This one is a keeper.

Video Friday: Wolf Lake

This Lou Diamond Phillips show was doomed from go because it debuted in September of 2001 and everybody was glued to the news. Such a brilliant show. It had a support group for werewolves who didn’t want to kill anymore. The fact that this hasn’t been resurrected and isn’t a huge cult show is inexplicable to me. Available on Amazon.

What I’m Watching: Charming Christmas

Charming ChristmasMeredith Rossman is the uptight heiress of Rossman’s Department store. She has made the business her entire life, not leaving any time for Christmas or romance, much to the chagrin of her parents. But when she is roped into donning the store’s antique Mrs. Claus outfit to play Mrs. Claus at Rossman’s famous Santaville, her life takes some unexpected turns. Through the help of the suit and the charming store Santa, Nick, Meredith rekindles her love of Christmas, the store, their employees and possibly even begins a new love with Nick. He is mysterious, great with children and always there when you need him. Just like the real Santa….wait…could he be? One thing is certain: from the moment Meredith put on the magical Mrs. Claus dress, her life would never be the same!

It helped (weirdly) that the heroine of this movie was played by Darla from Buffy. It was also a fun movie.

Video Friday: The Lone Gunmen

It’s appropriate that this early cancellation comes with a consipracy theory. The pilot episode of The Lone Gunmen, which spun off from The X-Files, detailed the Gunmen discovering a conspiracy to hijack an airplane out of Logan Airport and crash it into the World Trade Center. Sound familiar? It aired in January 2001. So when Condolezza Rice was testifying that “nobody could have anticipated” the World Trade Center attack, I was yelling at the television. Over all, it’s a funnier show than X-Files and it never gets to develop the complicated mythology so if The X-Files intrugued you, but was too heavy, this might be your ticket. Too bad it never went past one season. Avaliable on Amazon.

What I’m Watching: The Case For Christmas

Case for Christmas (Hallmark)Santa is in trouble! People are losing faith in him, and he’s being sued for ruining Christmas. Michael Sherman is a young lawyer and single father still mourning the loss of his wife who takes Santa on as a client. He not only helps save Kris Kringle but also discovers the courage to let love back into his life, making this truly the happiest season of all.

I know, I know, it’s Miracle On 34th Street, but this one has Dean Cain and, with a few exceptions, he can make anything good.

Video Friday: American Gothic (1995)

This show was so far ahead of its time. It could air now and be lauded as brilliant. In 1995 it was just considered weird. It really must be seen to be believed. Gary Cole is brilliant as the small town sherrif who might be the Devil. Available on Amazon.
